Meeting Notice. IPMS Houston Monthly Meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 10th October

Monday morning greetings to you all – Q4/2017 is upon us and with it, the October IPMS Houston meeting…

The time: 1900hrs, Tuesday 10th October
The place: Tracy Gee Community Center, 3599 Westcenter Dr, Houston, TX 77042

This month, it’s the Shelf Queen Challenge, so please bring in those sad and unwanted things – those kits you have started but are never going to finish, and would happily or reluctantly give up to someone else to complete (or, at the very least, let it sit on someone else’s shelf).

Also, Vince will have the kits for the snappily-named 1/72 Aircraft Challenge to give away to the suckers who want to take on a terrible old kit artisans who want to transform a classic kit. Anyway, our club prez is bringing in three boxes of kits I’m sure he doesn’t wish to take back to the house.

President, Vice President, Secretary. Sound good? Elections – voting for club positions. You need to a) be an IPMS USA Member and have a) an interest in the position and c) err… that’s it. So whether you’re going to Grant Us Another Term or you’re For New Leadership… vote!

ModelMania theme discussion and definition(s) – Bent, Battered, Broken, Busted or Rusted. Pretty much covers all bases from where I’m sitting.

Drumroll… news in from HobbyTown USA – 10% off for club members. HobbyTown doesn’t seem to get a lot of love (big filthy faceless corporation and all that I suppose) but I’m happy that both it and G&G are around – I’ve found some unusual kits at both, and (on occasion) some decent pricing at both. It always amazes me that our massive metropolis can’t support more than two middling hobby shops.

For me, while internet purchases are a must due to the global marketplace and the colossal range of weird and wonderful model kits and accessories out there (which no single store could contain), a good browse is great to get the creative juices flowing (or build up one’s Shelf Queen™ stash). Now we just need some record shops and I’ll be happy. On a visit to Calgary some years back I was in vinyl and styrene heaven after finding a combined record/model kit store.

Upcoming Shows/Contests:

Capitol Classic – Austin, TX – 14th October. All info at The show has a new location this year: Travis County Expo Center, 7311 Decker Lane, Austin TX. Thanks to those who have volunteered to judge so far. I am sure Boyd will be happy to take on more volunteers if you’re willing. Flyer attached

ModelFiesta 37 – San Antonio, TX – 17th February 2018. Yes, I know it’s early, but IPMS Alamo Squadron is casting the net for show judges. This Modelfiesta is the Region 6 Convention and they would like to have judges from across the region participate in the show. New category Buddy Build sounds interesting. A partnership between two builders – two models, one completed by each of the partners. The two kits must be of the same subject – can be different kits and different scales – each completed by one of the builders (i.e. one cannot build both and the other paint both). The recent AABSAMPSCENTEXARMOREXPO™ held in Georgetown last month will be recapped. This sounded like an excellent show and I’m sorry I couldn’t make it.

Other Topics:

Club Contest Coordinator – Mike Stucker takes on this role – thanks Mike.

Wings Over Houston: That time of the year again for you plane nuts to head to Ellington Airport (new home of the Lone Star Flight Museum) for Yes, I know it’s almost the same show every year (and actually seems to have less variety in recent years), but I’m going again for the 12th time in 15 years of living here so it can’t be that bad. Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd October. The USAF Thunderbirds do their stuff this year. Other than that, show schedule had not been published as of this morning.

And finally, with his impending European campaign via the wonderful Luchtvaart Hobby Shop (the Aviation Megastore just outside the perimeter fence of Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport), Mike West is Still In Business®.

See you tomorrow,

Tim Campbell
